Italy is set to elevate the travel experience with the planning of a new airport terminal in Florence, named Aeroporto Amerigo Vespucci. Crafted by the creative minds at Rafael Viñoly Architects, this terminal isn't just a hub for international travelers—it's a nod to Florence's rich wine culture, featuring its very own vineyard within the airport grounds.
A Haven for Traveling Wine Aficionados
Spanning over 538,195 square feet, the Aeroporto Amerigo Vespucci is designed to accommodate more than 5.9 million passengers each year. Wine enthusiasts will be particularly intrigued by the 19-acre vineyard, complete with 38 rows of vines, promising a unique attraction for visitors. A seasoned winemaker will oversee the vineyard's irrigation and cultivation, ensuring the production of fine wine, aged in cellars beneath the terminal itself.
Facelift for Functional and Efficient Travel
Travelers can look forward to an airport that prioritizes convenience and ease. Plans include extending and realigning the existing runway to better accommodate modern aircraft, while the terminal's design focuses on a vast public space at its heart, simplifying navigation for weary passengers. The project is set to unfold in two phases, with completion dates in 2026 and 2035 respectively.

Not only will the new terminal be visually stunning and user-friendly, but it's also aiming for the LEED Platinum green building standard. The design will harness natural lighting with extensive glazing and skylights, a green roof, and solar panels integrated throughout the structure.
